General idea about Vienna
Vienna, Austria’s capital, lies in the country’s east on the Danube River. Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer residence.
Survey carried out by Mercer in 2017
According to the World Bank, Austria has one of the highest figures for GDP per head in the world. Additionally, it is just behind the US and ahead of Germany and Britain. This survey was carried out by Mercer in 2017 where Austria’s capital stamped its authority over its European family. In this assessment 231 international cities pitch against each other for an assessment on the quality of life. Vienna once again scored top marks and kept its title for the eighth time in a row.
The survey compares the political, social and economic climate, medical care, education, and infrastructural conditions such as public transportation, power and water supply. The result of this survey is used by big companies to assess where they should locate and how much they should pay staff.
Why it has the best quality of life?
The government is a social democratic government which has a long tradition of investing in high-quality social housing. Consequently, this makes Vienna almost uniquely affordable among major cities.
It is one of the safest cities in the world and has an impeccable public transport system. The fares are very affordable and the service is provided around the clock. Moreover, the living cost is quite low in comparison with London and other European countries. The environment is just great most of the city dwellers prefer to use public transport or bicycles rather than using their own private vehicles.
Vienna benefited enormously from the fall of the Berlin Wall, becoming the gateway to eastern European countries that often have historic ties to the former Austro-Hungarian empire. Furthermore, many business giants have established themselves in the city.
The refugee crisis had no effect on this city, and it easily accommodated 99,000 refugees. Vienna has a population of 1.8 million people nearly. Initially it was not a great tourist spot. The tourists had a mindset that Austria is a place for skiing. But with a rise in budget for inbound flights the city, it is slowly catching up in the tourism industry. Moreover, there are excellent recreational facilities like theaters, drama, sports facilities, cinemas. Most importantly there is good food and and beautiful cars.
